Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in September and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His son, his son Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

He was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
